Tourism Management (Experimental Program of International Tourism Management)

Ⅰ. Introduction
The major of Tourism Management has a long history and outstanding faculty members. The major was established in 1988, which is one of the earliest tourism management undergraduate programs in China. In 2003, it was granted the right to confer the master's degree of "Tourism Management", and in 2010, it was granted the right to confer the master's degree of the first batch of "Tourism Management" in China. In 2020, the Experimental Program of International Tourism Management is set up. The program adheres to the orientation of "adapting to the trend of tourism internationalization, meeting the needs of capital culture and tourism", and forms the talent cultivation mode of "Grand Tourism" with "internationalization of education, integration of industry, education and research".
Xiaosong Gao once said: “Life is more than a temporary struggle, but also poetry and distant fields.” “A trip without delay” has become a way of life, but also a fashion of life. Tourism has become the world's number one happiness industry. Tourism has been the world's largest industry which has overtaken steel, automobiles, chemicals and finance since 1993. Tourism generated 10 percent of global jobs and 10 percent of global GDP in 2018. At the national level, many developed countries have taken tourism as a pillar or key industry to develop; In China, the tourism industry has been fully integrated into the national strategy. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen all aim to build an international tourism city or destination. With the acceleration of tourism internationalization and the eastward shift of the center of gravity of world tourism development, the demand for international tourism management talents is more urgent and vigorous in the future. No wonder many universities across the country offer tourism majors.
Ⅱ. Faculty
Excellent and qualified teachers are abundant in our department. 50% of the teachers are doctorate graduates from famous universities, more than 50% have the experience of studying abroad or visiting abroad. In addition, experts from well-known international universities and leaders of tourism authorities are invited as visiting professors.
Ⅲ. Features & Advantages
1. International Standards
International Tourism belongs to the foreign-related industry, so we construct our discipline with international first-class standard. The program will be equipped with international teachers. We will actively introduce postdoctoral and doctoral graduates from abroad, and the ones with oversea experience and graduating from domestic well-known universities. The program will combine English audio-visual speaking courses to strengthen students’ communication skills. Part of the courses will be taught in English. Chinese and foreign students will be taught in the same class to improve students' ability of cross-cultural communication and cooperation. Exchange programs and other government-funded study abroad programs will be provided to improve students' international communication ability.
2. Interdisciplinary Integration
The School of International Economics and Management innovatively integrated the superior resources of Tourism Management, Business Administration and Computer Science, and set up the Experimental Program of International Tourism Management. Multidisciplinary intersection is highlighted in some cross-disciplinary courses, such as Econometrics, Big Data Business Analysis, Python Programming, Financial Data Mining and Business Intelligence, International investment, Multinational Corporation Theory and Practice, etc. While cultivating compound talents, it will also improve the employment rate of graduates.
3. Modular Curriculum System
The aim of the experimental program is to train senior professional managers with interdisciplinary background and international vision. To this end, the experimental program has set up a "modular" curriculum system, including the basic module, the international tourism module, the management module and the practice module. Students can combine their own interests and advantages to choose flexibly to achieve personalized training. There will be short course modules in the program, mainly leading lectures given by famous tourism professors and leaders of tourism authorities at home and abroad.
4. Tutorial System
Each student will be provided with academic and professional tutors. The academic tutor is a backbone teacher, who will give students advice and guidance on academic planning, career and life planning, and writing academic papers. Practice tutors are international tourism industry executives or tourism authority leaders who will lead students to solve practical problems. The double tutorial system not only realizes the combination of theory and practice, but also sets up another channel for graduates' employment in advance.
Ⅳ. Career Development
Many people wrongly think that graduates from Tourism Management can only be tour guides. The international tourism market is huge and critical for countries and companies. How can 10% of the world's employed population work as tour guides? Graduates can span the political, academic and industrial sectors. Employment destinations include: tourism institutions (such as tourism bureau, tourism vocational colleges), large tourism enterprise groups (Cyts, Ctrip etc.), airlines, foreign travel agencies, non-tourism institutions and enterprises will be available, such as government, banks, securities companies and internet companies. To study further, graduates can be recommended or admitted to famous universities. The international training mode enables graduates to connect with the training system at home and abroad easily, which is conducive to apply for master's degree in well-known foreign universities.
